The Municipality of New Lucena once again brought pride to its people as it secured the 2nd Runner-Up spot in the 2025 JUANA Awards, held on April 30, 2025, at the Gateway Hotel in Pavia, Iloilo. This recognition celebrates local government units that have shown outstanding efforts in advancing Gender and Development (GAD) in their communities.
This achievement reflects the strong and compassionate leadership of Mayor Liecel Mondejar-Seville, whose unwavering commitment to gender equality and inclusive governance has paved the way for significant improvements in the town’s GAD initiatives. Her full support and advocacy were instrumental in reaching this milestone.
At the forefront of the municipality’s GAD efforts is Ma. Reysa Jagunap, the designated GAD Focal Person, whose dedication and passion continues to drive the implementation of gender-responsive programs. Representing the municipality at the awarding ceremony were Ma. Reysa Jagunap, Municipal Local Government Operations Officer (MLGOO), Jennifer Ealdama, and Sangguniang Bayan Secretary Philine Simora—three empowered women who showcased the values and vision of New Lucena.
As 2nd Runner-Up, New Lucena received:
- A Juana Plaque
- A Prize Certificate worth ₱100,000 for small infrastructure projects for GAD
- A Congratulatory Tarpaulin
New Lucena shared the spotlight with two other exemplary municipalities:
Champion – Municipality of Alimodian, Iloilo
- Received ₱300,000 worth of GAD infrastructure projects, a Juana Plaque, and a congratulatory tarpaulin.
1st Runner-Up – Municipality of Anilao, Iloilo
- Received ₱200,000 worth of GAD infrastructure projects, a Juana Plaque, and a congratulatory tarpaulin.
The JUANA Awarding Ceremony was organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Iloilo Province, through the Iloilo Provincial Local Governance Resource Center (IPLGRC) in partnership with the Iloilo Provincial Government (IPG).
In his opening message, Provincial Director Engr. Carmelo F. Orbista, CESO V, emphasized the positive impact of the Magna Carta of Women and highlighted the strong collaboration between DILG Iloilo and the provincial government in upholding women’s rights. Provincial Administrator Dr. Raul N. Banias, who delivered a message on behalf of Governor Arthur R. Defensor, Jr., underscored the province’s continuous efforts and accomplishments in advancing programs that protect and empower women.
The recognition received by New Lucena serves as a testament to its ongoing commitment to inclusive growth, equal opportunity, and community development. The local government’s efforts in promoting gender equality continue to inspire neighboring municipalities and reflect a united vision of a better, more inclusive future.
