March marks National Women’s Month, a time to celebrate the progress, resilience, and empowerment of women across the Philippines. This year, we commemorate a significant milestone: the 50-year journey of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW).

The story of PCW is a narrative told through pronouns—starting with her, then including him, later embracing them, and now calling upon all of us to take part in this ongoing mission.

One Story. One Nation. One People.

This journey mirrors the aspirations of Bagong Pilipinas—a nation striving for unity, inclusivity, and equality. What began as a movement to integrate women into national development has evolved into a collective effort that involves every Filipino, regardless of gender, in the pursuit of gender equality and women empowerment.

The fight for women’s rights in the Philippines has deep roots. From the suffragist movement that granted women the right to vote in 1937 to the institutionalization of gender-responsive policies, our country has made remarkable strides. However, the path to true equality is continuous, and the story is far from over.

From History to Herstory to Our Story

Women’s movements have long paved the way for transformative change. The establishment of the Philippine Commission on Women in 1975 was a defining moment, signaling the institutional commitment to mainstreaming gender concerns in all aspects of development.

Over the decades, the PCW has led national efforts to break barriers—fostering policies on gender-responsive governance, promoting women’s economic empowerment, and advocating against gender-based violence. These milestones have been shaped by the contributions of individuals from all walks of life, proving that gender equality is not just a women’s issue but a societal imperative.

Today, as we celebrate five decades of progress, we also recognize the work that remains. Women continue to face challenges—whether in the workforce, in leadership roles, or in the fight for equal opportunities. This is why our national story must continue to be written, and edited by and for the Filipino people who believe in a more just and equitable future.

Moving Forward: A Golden Era for Women’s Empowerment

As we usher in the golden era of the Philippine Commission on Women, we renew our commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and opportunities of every woman. The journey ahead requires resilience, inclusivity, and collective action—ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of gender equality.

Let this milestone remind us that our story is still unfolding, and each of us has a role to play. By working together—government institutions, civil society, private sector, and individuals—we can build a Bagong Pilipinas that truly embodies unity, inclusion, and equality.

This National Women’s Month, let us celebrate not just the achievements of the past but also the promise of the future. The golden years of gender equality are within reach, and together, **we will continue writing a better, more inclusive story.**
